About the Condition

Dermanyssus gallinae, commonly known as the poultry red mite, is a blood-feeding ectoparasite that affects chickens in both backyard/household flocks and intensive commercial laying systems. The mite hides in cracks, crevices, and litter during the day and emerges at night to feed on the birds' blood. Chronic infestation is associated with reduced welfare and health status, anemia, restlessness, decreased egg production and egg quality, and the mite can act as a vector for other pathogens. It can also cause allergic dermatitis in other animal species, including horses, that come into contact with infested environments.

‍

Mechanism of Action

Natural acaricidal products such as Ectocid Natural Spray, Ectocid Natural Powder, and Herba-Top Ecto-Plus act primarily through direct contact exposure: active components are absorbed through the mite's cuticle, disrupting its protective waxy layer and interfering with its respiratory (tracheal/spiracle) system, leading to progressive desiccation and death, typically evaluated over a 24–72 hour contact window.

Herba-Top Ecto-Plus has also been administered orally via drinking water in field studies, which raises the possibility of an additional route of action - the mite ingesting the compound while blood-feeding on a treated bird. However, this systemic mode of action has not yet been confirmed; the research team explicitly recommends dedicated in vitro feeding trials to verify it, so it should currently be considered a hypothesis rather than an established mechanism.

Study Summary Table

Stage Product Study Type Model / Species Dose Sample Size Key Result Source
I (2019) Herba-Top Ecto-Plus, undiluted In vitro D. gallinae, 2 field isolates (household "G" & commercial layer farm "F") Undiluted Isolate G: 6 tubes × 20 mites; Isolate F: 8 tubes × 10 mites per variant 100% mortality from 24h contact, both isolates; average LC50 = 53.0 (19.0 for isolate G, 86.9 for isolate F) USAMV Cluj-Napoca, Stage I Report, 2019
I (2019) Herba-Top Ecto-Plus, diluted 1:200 & 1:500 In vitro Same as above 1:200 (5 ml/L) and 1:500 (2 ml/L), manufacturer-recommended Same as above Efficacy roughly halved vs. undiluted; only 26.7–47.7% at 72h in isolate F Same
I (2019) Ectocid Natural Spray In vitro Same as above Undiluted, applied to filter paper Same as above Weak effect; mean efficacy 40.8% (isolate G) / 9.5% (isolate F) Same
I (2019) Ectocid Natural Powder In vitro D. gallinae, isolate G 320 mg / 60mm Petri dish 6 plates × 20 mites per variant 100% mortality at 24h — identical to the talc (inert excipient) control, so the specific contribution of the active ingredient could not be confirmed Same
VII (2020) Herba-Top Ecto-Plus + Ectocid Natural Spray (combined protocol) In vivo, field Laying hens, intensive system (10,000-bird commercial farm, Sibiu county) HTEP 5 ml/L drinking water × 7 days; ENS spray on day 1 & 7; 2 treatment cycles, 28 days apart 18 traps/timepoint (108 total) Mite biomass/trap decreased 54.35% after cycle 1 and 44.44% after cycle 2 vs. pre-treatment levels; no adverse effect on water intake USAMV Cluj-Napoca, Stage VII Report, 2020
VIII (2021) Herba-Top Ecto-Plus (batch/lot 2) In vivo, field Backyard laying hens, household system (4 households, 60 hens total; 45 treated / 15 control) 5 ml/L drinking water, ad libitum × 7 days; 2 cycles, 2 weeks apart 20 traps/timepoint (100 total) −68.93% vs. untreated control after cycle 1 (P=0.015); −57.79% vs. baseline and −70.91% vs. control after cycle 2 (P=0.021); substantial variability between individual households USAMV Cluj-Napoca, Stage VIII Report, 2021
